Collaborative ecosystems, key players in business economic development

What are collaborative ecosystems?

Environments where multiple organizations, also competitors and other stakeholders come together in a much more effective way to take advantage of business opportunities under certain standards of integrity and trust, where you have to find the right partners for the ecosystem and create an environment that includes equality between them. The power of these ecosystems lies in generating new opportunities that benefit the environment, participating in more flexible and agile ways to respond quickly to changing market needs, and establishing a sustainable relationship with purpose that goes beyond individual goals.

These collaborative ecosystems are best understood when we look for their relationship to biological terms of cooperation, such as “the maintenance of peaceful coexistence and the union of individuals of the same species for their survival”. Among its advocates, we highlight the figure of James Moore precursor of the term ‘business ecosystem’ who also called its members as ‘organisms of the business world’.

What challenges do these ecosystems currently face?

Overcoming biases and fostering the biodiversity of companies, from the largest to the smallest, all are an important link that strengthens an environment where new opportunities arise, recognizing the value of diverse agents, whether by their nature, size or sectors.

How can we reduce them?

By achieving a much broader perspective and vision of collaboration:

  • Vertical or complementary: with agents at different levels of the same sector of the production chain.
  • Horizontal or competitive: leaving competition behind to address complex problems for the benefit of all.
  • Transversal: between agents from different sectors, favoring opportunities that result in the most disruptive innovation.

In addition, it will require long-term support and trust-building. Agents that work actively to identify common objectives and complementarities, rewarding transforming attitudes and principles.

As we would do in our own organization, ecosystems should strengthen values that foster territorial development, collaboration, innovation and reciprocity.

The SDGs are not achievable without true collaboration between multiple companies and other stakeholders to address them. We cannot change systemic problems with isolated actions, we need large-scale coordinated actions supported by people. #ODS17 ‘Partnerships for the Goals’.
